Gaojia Garden: A Harmonious Blend of History and Modernity

DDO Design's Unique Approach to Urban Public Space Revitalization

DDO Design breathes new life into the historic Gaojia Garden, creating a tranquil urban oasis that marries traditional and contemporary design elements.

Located under the Gongchen Bridge in Hangzhou, Gaojia Garden is a serene retreat nestled in quiet woods by the canal. This urban public space, revitalized by DDO Design, is a testament to the team's ability to respect history while infusing modern design techniques and forms of manifestation. The result is a unique blend of old and new, where the echoes of the past harmonize with the melodies of the present.

The design team drew inspiration from the refined and popular tastes of culture and arts. They aimed to create a simple and elegant life in a quiet environment, focusing on music, chess, calligraphy, painting, poetry, incense, and tea. The result is a space that reflects the art of life of the people by the canal.

One of the standout features of Gaojia Garden is the art and culture corridor. This corridor, which connects the entrance, is designed by combining both new and old elements. It not only increases the interest of visitors but also thoroughly reflects the history, truly realizing cultural inheritance and transmission.

The Nanhua Building is another highlight of the project. It showcases DDO Design's commitment to respecting history and preserving original design elements. The team used modern design techniques and forms of manifestation to create a tea house reminiscent of the Republic of China era.

The traditional tea house is mainly built using stone, cloth, wood, metal, and leather materials. The background wall in the foyer is designed with spunk silk with partial embroidery, delicately woven in an overlapping way to give an effect of layering and to show the purity in the space and the peace in old days.

This project, which started in May 2020 and finished in January 2021, has been recognized for its innovative approach to urban regeneration and reuse of old buildings. It was awarded Silver in A' Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design Award in 2022, a testament to the team's remarkable design expertise and innovation.
